Steve Curtis: Nine-Time Offshore Powerboat Racing World Champion
In this episode of Powerboat Talk, we sit down with Steve Curtis, one of offshore powerboat racing’s most accomplished throttlemen. Curtis won his first UIM Class 1 World Championship in 1985 at age 21, becoming the youngest ever and first Englishman to win the title. He has since amassed nine world championships and built a remarkable career as both a racer and technical expert, with hands-on experience building, rigging and setting up offshore race boats.
From Class 1 Offshore Racing to the E1 Series
Curtis reflects on receiving his MBE from Queen Elizabeth II and his efforts to help bring offshore powerboat racing back to the international stage. He also discusses racing in the E1 Series, the unique challenges of electric foiling race boats, and why E1’s combination of celebrity involvement, social media and B-to-B business relationships could provide a model for growing offshore racing.
242 MPH at Lake of the Ozarks
Curtis takes us inside his record-setting 242 mph run at Lake of the Ozarks in the Darana Hybrid turbine-powered boat and talks about working with its owner, IHRA President Daryl Cuttell. He also shares his perspective on the controversy surrounding Cuttell and IHRA, including why he believes Cuttell has not been accurately portrayed.
After decades at the highest levels of powerboat racing, Curtis isn’t finished yet. He closes the conversation by discussing his hope of returning to UIM Class 1 offshore racing in 2027.
