Harlan Orrin: A Legend in West Coast Performance Boat Design

Harlan Orrin is a true legend in the West Coast performance boating world, with more than 60 years of hands-on experience designing molds, hulls, and custom wood decks. His story begins with deep roots in boat building, dating back to World War II, when his father and uncle built wooden boats for the U.S. military. That early exposure laid the foundation for a lifelong career in high-performance boat design and craftsmanship.

From Mandella Boats to Industry Icon

Orrin’s journey began in 1957 at Mandella Boats after his uncle Ernie acquired the company. In just four years, the team built 54 boats, and during that time Orrin constructed the first race boat for future Rayson-Craft founder Rudy Ramos. This early experience placed him at the center of the rapidly evolving Southern California performance boating scene.

He later launched his own company, Orrin Boats, and went on to collaborate with many of the most influential names in the industry, including Sanger, Hallett, Eliminator, Aqua Craft, Scarab, Tige, and Commander. Throughout his career, Orrin contributed to the development of numerous iconic and race-winning performance boats, from drag boats to marathon hulls.

Innovation, Craftsmanship, and Lasting Influence

Known for innovations such as the original Sanger bubble deck design, Orrin built his reputation on precision craftsmanship and an intuitive approach to boat design. Unlike many modern builders, he developed his designs by eye and experience rather than relying on CAD technology, a testament to his deep understanding of performance boat dynamics.

Among his most remarkable achievements is the recreation of the legendary “Banzai” drag hydro, a project completed using only photographs and historical reference materials. Today, at 90 years old, Orrin remains active in the shop, designing, restoring, and installing custom wood decks, continuing a legacy that has helped shape performance boating for generations.
