Tyler Speer is one of the most versatile competitors in modern drag boat racing and an emerging force in the world of nitro-powered hydroplanes. Currently campaigning an Injected Nitro Hydro in the Top Alcohol Hydro class, Speer is pushing the limits of performance while developing one of the most technically demanding machines in performance boat racing.

Speer’s racing career began early, starting in motocross at just five years old before progressing through go-karts, the Allison Legacy Series, and stock car racing. His path eventually led him to the ARCA Racing Series, where he made his debut in 2010. In 2014, Speer transitioned from land-based racing to the water, entering the competitive world of drag boat racing. He quickly proved his ability behind the wheel, capturing the 2016 Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series Pro Modified World Championship and later the 2018 Pro Outlaw World Championship, establishing himself as a serious contender in high-performance boat racing.

Away from the race course, Speer works alongside his father, Tim Speer, at the family’s Proboat shop in Woodstock, Georgia, where they build boats, tune engines, and continually refine their own race program. Their hands-on approach to boat building and engine development has played a key role in Speer’s success and ongoing evolution as both a driver and builder in the performance boating industry.

In this episode of the Powerboat Talk podcast, Tyler shares insight into the team’s transition from a single-prop to a dual-prop setup on their Injected Nitro Hydro, the steep learning curve of tuning a nitro-injected drag boat engine, and the challenges of competing in the Top Alcohol Hydro class. He also discusses working with NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster champion Randy Meyer, whose experience with high-horsepower nitro engines has helped guide the team as they refine their nitro boat program.

Be sure to listen to the next episode of Powerboat Talk, where Tyler returns to discuss his preparations for the 2026 IHRA Drag Boat season and what lies ahead in the world of professional drag boat racing.
